Jason McCartney
About Jason
“I’m a proud Yorkshireman and live in my own home in Honley. My parents live down the valley in Holmbridge.”
RAF OFFICER
“For 9 years I was an officer in the RAF serving in Las Vegas, Turkey, Gibraltar, Germany, Cyprus and Iraq. I recently became the Honorary President of the Royal Air Force Association in Huddersfield. I’m a member of the Royal British Legion and a supporter of the RAF Benevolent Fund.”
YORKSHIRE TELEVISION
“I left the RAF, went to University to study broadcast journalism. After a year with BBC Radio in Leeds and Middlesbrough, I got my dream job with ITV Yorkshire in Leeds where I became the weekend presenter for Calendar News & Sport. I interviewed the likes of David Beckham, Geoff Boycott and Dame Kelly Homes. I first got into broadcasting by hosting the very early morning radio show on Huddersfield FM, which became Pennine FM, back in 1995.”
HUDDERSFIELD TOWN FC
“I’m a keen Huddersfield Town fan and try to get to as many games as I can at the Galpharm Stadium. I cheered on Town at Wembley in 1994 and 1995 and one of my proudest moments was reporting pitch side for Calendar at Cardiff on the 2004 playoff final win over Mansfield.”

About Simon
Simon’s family come from the West Riding and Simon was born and raised in Yorkshire. His ambition to pursue a career in the military was cut short by injury and so having previously been awarded an Honours degree in Economics, Simon re-trained as a barrister and was called to the bar in 1990.
Since then, based in chambers in Leeds, Simon has both prosecuted and defended in the Crown Court and has appeared in the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords. His speciality is defending service personnel at courts-martial both in the UK and abroad.
Simon is married to Louise who is also a barrister. Their professional rules prevent them from being against each other in court! They enjoy the countryside and the coast as do their fox terriers George and Harry.
Simon and Louise enjoy playing tennis and Simon keeps threatening to get back into hockey and squash! He is also a Church Warden and is interested in classic cars and military history.
Simon and Louise support the RNLI, Help for Heroes and the Dog’s Trust.
Simon’s Experience
Simon was part of the team in Beverley and Holderness which increased the Conservative Majority from just above 700 to over 2,500 at the 2005 General Election. He was then asked to become Deputy Chairman (Political) of the Association with responsibility for the 2007 Local Elections. In those elections the number of Conservative councillors was doubled as Labour and LibDem heartlands turned blue!
Following the election Simon was asked to become Association Chairman and as Chairman restructured the Association so that it could contribute to Conservative campaigning locally and nationally. In 2008 and 2009 Beverley and Holderness reached the finals of the National Excellence Awards in recognition of their campaigning efforts.
Simon was elected Regional Deputy Chairman (Political) for Yorkshire and the Humber in 2008 and was responsible for the project linking CF groups with particular Parliamentary Seats.
He is delighted to be back in the West Riding as Parliamentary Candidate for Dewsbury County.
Campaigning in Dewsbury
In 2009 Simon was selected as the Conservative candidate for the seat of Dewsbury and in the early hours of 7th May 2010 Simon was confirmed as Dewsbury’s 3rd Conservative Member of Parliament in 142 years with a majority of 1526 after polling 18,898 votes.
As a constituency Dewsbury encompasses both urban and rural areas. In the town of Dewsbury regeneration and social cohesion are absolute priorities. As is standing up to extremism in whatever guise it appears. The nearby town of Mirfield is threatened with the closure of a much loved school at Castle Hall.
The wards of Denby Dale and Kirkburton share the concerns of much of rural England so long ignored. For them public transport, effective policing, and the decline of vital facilities from Post Offices to pubs are all key issues.

Commenting on her selection, Karen said:
“I am proud and honoured to have been selected as the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Huddersfield. I have lived in the Huddersfield area for over 25 years and I look forward to speaking up for Huddersfield in the months to come.”
“Across Kirklees you can see the results of 12 years of neglect from a Labour government with unemployment on the rise, businesses struggling and development schemes being scrapped. I will be setting out the Conservatives vision for change and listening to the views of people across Huddersfield.”
